Google Just Changed Search Forever. Here's What Every Car Dealer Needs to Know
Table of contents
If you've noticed customers walking onto your forecourt already knowing exactly what they want (the spec, the price, even which dealer they'd prefer), there's a good chance AI had something to do with it. And if Google's latest announcement is anything to go by, that trend is about to get a whole lot bigger.
At its annual Google I/O conference in May 2026, Google made what many are calling the biggest change to how its search engine works in over 25 years. The humble search box, the one billions of people have typed into every single day, has been completely reinvented. And for independent car dealers who rely on Google to bring in website visitors and enquiries, it's worth paying attention.
So What Actually Changed?
Until now, when someone typed "used Ford Focus dealers near me" into Google, they'd get a list of links (websites, maps, reviews) and they'd click through to find what they were looking for. You probably built your online presence around getting onto that first page.
Google is moving away from that model.
Instead of showing a list of links, Google's search is now being powered by AI. Rather than leaving the user to sift through results themselves, Google's AI reads through websites across the internet and pulls together a direct answer, right there on the search results page. No clicking required. No visiting your website at all, in some cases.
Think of it less like being handed a list of garages to ring round, and more like asking a trusted colleague who's already done the legwork and just gives you the answer.
Google calls this AI Mode, and as of this summer, it's becoming the default experience for everyone using Google worldwide. The search box has been rebuilt from the ground up and can now accept not just text, but photos, videos, and even what you're looking at in your browser. The results it gives back are conversational, direct, and increasingly, final.
What Does This Mean for Your Dealership's Website?
Here's the part that dealers are right to be curious about.
When Google's AI is giving people answers directly, fewer people need to click through to a website to get information. Research from early 2026 shows that in searches where AI features appear, the number of people who click on a website result has dropped significantly, in some cases by more than half compared to a couple of years ago.
That's a meaningful shift. If your dealership's website has historically appeared near the top of Google, you may already be noticing fewer visitors coming from search, even if your rankings haven't changed.
But here's the important flip side: the dealers whose websites are being used as sources by Google's AI are actually seeing more traffic and more enquiries, not less.
When Google's AI answers a question, it pulls information from websites it trusts. If your dealership's website is one of those sources, Google effectively recommends you to the person asking. You're not just appearing in a list, you're being named as the answer. That's a far more powerful position to be in.
The question is: how do you become one of those trusted sources?
Enter AEO: The Next Step Beyond SEO
You've probably heard of SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It's the process of making your website visible in Google's search results. Most dealers have some understanding of it, even if it's not something they manage day-to-day.
There's now a newer term worth getting familiar with: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation.
Where SEO was about getting your website to rank on page one, AEO is about getting your business to be the answer that AI gives when someone asks a relevant question. It's about making sure that when a potential customer asks Google's AI "which used car dealers near Birmingham have good reviews?" or "where can I find a reliable Vauxhall Corsa under £8,000 in Leeds?", your dealership is the one being mentioned.
The good news is that many of the things that make a great dealership website for SEO also lay the foundation for AEO. But there are additional steps that matter now, and getting ahead of them while the landscape is still shifting gives independent dealers a real advantage over competitors who haven't caught on yet.
Why This Matters Right Now, Not in Six Months
One thing worth knowing about these changes: they tend to reward early movers.
When Google made significant changes to search in the past, whether that was prioritising mobile-friendly websites or giving weight to online reviews, the businesses that adapted quickly gained ground on competitors who waited. The same principle applies here.
Research into car buyers' behaviour shows that nearly half of all car buyers now use AI tools at some point during their search for a vehicle. That number was far lower just two years ago, and it's growing fast. These are buyers who are forming opinions, shortlisting dealers, and even deciding who to contact before they ever pick up the phone or visit a forecourt. Being visible in AI search isn't a future concern. It's happening now.
